Originally, this design by Mikael Frödin came to my fly box quite “late”. It was introduced much earlier, but for some reason I didn´t get interested about it. A few years back I was going to Norway and sat down at the tying table wondering what fly I might need on the upcoming trip. Somehow the Samurai came to my mind, but I wasn´t sure about the recipe of the fly. I remembered something and started to tie .The first two versions weren´t very fancy, but the few next ones looked quite good to me. I don´t like cone heads, so I wrapped a few rounds of thin lead wire under the dubbing. I tied maybe ten versions of this fly in black and green combinations, and put them to my box. In Norway I sat by the campfire trying to decide on the next fly. Those Samurais got my interest. I picked one with less green in it, and after a few minutes I hooked the first one. Since then I have used it with quite good success.
